School and Community Health Equity Needs Assessment (SCHENA)

This course is designed to provide school nurses in districts who received the Comprehensive School Health Services (CSHS) grant from the Department of Public Health, School Health Services Unit with the tools they need to conduct needs assessments using a racial equity lens in preparation for conducting CQI projects. The goal of the CSHS Program is to build on existing infrastructure to provide all school-age children access to a school health service program that is managed by a qualified school nurse manager. This program will strengthen the capacity of schools to provide case management and support to students with more significant health needs, continuous quality improvement through data collection and analysis, and programs that provide access to care to address health disparities and racial inequities in the community in order to support student academic achievement and reduce chronic absenteeism.

The first year of SCHENA will focus on building the skills necessary to implement changes in the school setting to improve performance measures set out by DPH. In future years of SCHENA nurses will pick a performance measure and work to improve it. These measures include; absenteeism, English language learners (ELL), obesity, behavioral health, homelessness, special healthcare needs, referrals, trusted adults and bullying.
